Breakdown Survival: Essential Tips on Regaining Access To Your Car
Follow these steps to ensure the safety of your family and your vehicle
Stranded Motorist
1. Park Safely: Place the working car close enough to reach with jumper cables, but don’t let the vehicles touch. Ensure both vehicles are turned off with the parking brakes set on each vehicle.
2. Open The Hood on Both Vehicles: Locate the battery on each vehicle. Remove all terminal covers and corrosion.
3. Attach Red Cable to Dead Battery (+): Connect the red (positive) clamp to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
4. Attach Red Cable to Good Battery (+): Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal on the working battery.
5. Attach Black Cable to Good Battery (-): Attach the black (negative) clamp to the negative terminal on the working battery.

6. Attach Black Cable to Metal Surface: Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car, away from the battery.
7. Start the Working Battery Car: Let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
8. Start the Dead Battery Car: Try starting the car with the dead battery, if it doesn’t start, let it charge and try again 5 minutes later.
9. Remove Cables: Carefully remove the cables in the reverse order, starting with the black clamp on the original dead battery car.
10. Keep it Running: Let the newly started car run for at least 15 minutes to recharge the battery back to optimal use.
