Breakdown Survival: Essential Tips on How to change a Flat Tire
Follow these steps to ensure the safety of your family and your vehicle
Find a Safe Spot
- Action: As soon as you notice an issue, turn on your hazard lights and move your vehicle to the shoulder or a safe area away from traffic as quickly and safely as you possibly can.
- Tips: NEVER stop in the midst of a curve. Slowly progress 5mph or slower until you are in a SAFE area. You want to change your tire in an area where you are highly visible to oncoming traffic.
Apply Parking Brake
- Action: Engage the emergency parking brake. There are two main types, hand-pull or foot-push brakes known as Levar Parking Brake and Electronic Parking Brake.
- Tips: Depending on which tire is flat, place a WHEEL-CHOCK behind one of the other tires to prevent the car from rolling. If you’re having trouble finding these e-brakes, check your vehicles’ car manual.
Gather Tools & Spare
- Action: Grab your spare tire, jack, wheel-chock and lug wrench. These items are usually located in the trunk or cargo area beneath the felt floor panel of the vehicle.
- Tips: Retrieving or locating a spare tire can often prove to be quite a challenge on some vehicles. If you have trouble check your vehicles’ car manual located usually in the glove box.
Loosen The Lug-Nuts
- Action: Remove wheel cover (hubcap). Lightly pry around edges until it pops off. Use the lug wrench to turn each lug nut counterclockwise. *DO NOT remove lug nuts yet*
- Tips: When changing a tire; if a lug nut is stuck, you can try using a breaker bar, impact wrench, lug nut extractor set, torque wrench, dead blow hammer, or impact hammer.

Follow these steps to ensure the safety of your family and your vehicle
Position The Jack
- Action: Use a stable surface and place the jack on the jack points under the car’s frame near the flat tire. Raise the vehicle until the flat tire is about 8-12 inches off the ground.
- Tips: Check your vehicle’s manual to identify the proper jack points, usually marked along the car’s frame near the tires. Placing the jack in the WRONG spot can damage your vehicle or make it unstable. ALWAYS place the jack on a firm level surface.
Remove Lugs & Flat Tire
- Action: Take off the loosened lug nuts and carefully pull the flat tire off. Have your spare tire nearby and ready to put on immediately after taking off the flat tire.
- Tips: NEVER position yourself under the car when it is lifted by a jack alone. If you need to work underneath, use jack stands for added safety. Once the lug nuts have been removed, place them in a small container to ensure they don’t get lost in the process.
Mount The Spare Tire
- Action: Align the spare tire with the lug stems and slide it onto the wheelbase. Tighten by hand, then lower the jack and tighten the lug nuts fully with the lug wrench.
- Tips: When changing a tire, you should tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to apply equal torque to all the wheel studs. Lower the car slowly to the ground. Use a torque wrench to tighten each lug nut to the car manufacturer’s recommended torque specification.
Check The Spare Tire
- Action: Ensure the spare tire and lug nuts are properly secured and check the tire pressure in your spare tire to ensure it has the correct pounds per square inch (PSI).
- Tips: Finally, you should recheck everything. Check tire pressure. Inspect the spare tire for visible damage or leaks. Recheck the lug nut torque. Examine wheel alignment. Ensure the spare tire is flush against the wheel hub and is NOT misaligned.
